Frequently Asked Questions

Hair Doctors are a dedicated clinic run by our founding doctors Dr Oz and Dr Ateka, both fully qualified surgeons registered with AHPRA. All our consultations are directly with the surgeons unlike other clinics who utilise non-clinical staff and/or sales consultants.

Our doctors perform Hair Transplant surgery on a daily basis and this is their expert field. Other clinics offer hair transplant surgery along with other cosmetic procedures so are unlikely to have the same experience and skill set. Dr Oz and Dr Ateka perform the full surgery including extraction and implantation, at no point is any part of this delegated to a hair technician or nurse. Please always ask the clinic you are consulting with who will be performing the surgery.

FUE, also known as Follicular Unit Extraction OR Follicular Unit Excision, is a hair transplant procedure in which the hair follicles or hair follicular units are individually removed from the donor area one by one. The follicles naturally occur in groups of 1-4 hairs in the donor area of the scalp. FUE can be performed by a manual, motorized or automated method depending on the individual patient. The excision method utilized varies based on the characteristics of the hair follicles such as hair shaft thickness, curliness, exit angle, etc.

  • Significantly less post-op discomfort or pain.
  • No linear scar.
  • Surgical wounds that are much smaller and less obvious and only require days to heal.
  • Individual hair follicle harvesting allows for donor hair to be extracted from areas that have been impossible to harvest using the more traditional methods such as zones located on the sides of the scalp as well as the beard or body.
  • Extraction of hair from dense donor areas of the scalp and redistributing those hairs to the balding areas in order to minimize the contrast of balding and donor areas. This strategic extraction allows for a more even appearance of hair in donor areas that minimizes the appearance of balding.

The method of individually removing the hair units allows them to be harvested one at a time without leaving a linear scalp scar. There will be some small punctate wounds immediately after the procedure in the donor areas. After 2 – 4 days, the wounds will close and the microscopic scars will be difficult or impossible to see.

  • Patients who prefer to wear their hair in a shorter style since FUE does not result in a linear scar
  • Patients with a small donor area from which to extract hair grafts or those who have a tight scalp
  • Patients with scarring from a prior FUT procedure may be able to conceal their scar during the second procedure with the option of placing FUE grafts directly into the scar line
  • Patients who have a limited amount of time set aside before returning to work.

A hair transplant requires genetically strong and healthy hair. Traditionally found around the back and sides of the head. Commonly known as the donor area or safe zone. As a result, these hairs are immune from genetic hair loss. Success relies on a number of important factors. Paramount is the experience and competence of the registered doctor performing the hair transplant. Performed to a high standard a hair transplant will grow and look natural.

A common hair transplant faq’s myth. The simple answer is no. Using someone else’s hair for a hair transplant is not an option. The hair used must be your DNA match. Be it scalp or body donor hair.

One of the most important aspects of a hair transplant result. The skills of the surgeon will dictate how natural a hair transplant result is achieved. As a result, a mix of surgical and artistic qualities are required to create a head of hair that mimics nature.

Follicular grafts are groupings of hairs. One to four hairs grafts may be found. The sides of the head have more one and two hair grafts. With more of the larger three and four hair grafts found around the back. Follicular grafts are now the standard for hair transplantation today. The removal and distribution of the grafts recreate the natural appearance of a head of hair.

A hair transplant cannot replace like for like hair lost, that is impossible. As a result, a hair transplant has to create the illusion of fullness especially when treating advanced stages of hair loss. This is achieved by the careful distribution of the hair follicles to block to scalp being visible. When this is achieved the look of a good head of hair is the result. A hair transplant can be a good option for minor to advanced hair loss stages on the right candidate.

For a hair transplant to work the hair used must be genetically healthy and strong. The hair in the donor area must be within a safe zone to ensure when moved they will continue to regrow as normal. When performed to the highest standard the hair growth will mimic that of the hair around the back and sides and grow over the individual’s life.

At Hair Doctors, we undertake regular post operative reviews to ensure everything is running smoothly. We review you day 3 and day 14 post operatively and perform your hair wash ourselves on day 3. We also review at 3 months, 6 months and 12 months.

Everyone will be treated in accordance to their needs, requirements and personal budgets to provide the fullest most relevant service possible. There are many variables which need to be taken into consideration including hair types, levels of confidence and desired expectations and outcomes which are best dealt with through individual consultancy and discussion.

Male pattern baldness is progressive. especially when it starts at an earlier age in the early 20´s for example. Planning your hair restoration is an important aspect to a successful hair restoration result. Most patients can have up to 2 or 3 procedures in a lifetime if needed however, we prefer performing one procedure and allowing medications to retain your native hairs therefore diminishing the need for further transplants.

The recommended procedure works best for men above the age of 25. Ideally the hair loss pattern needs to be obvious. Undergoing a hair transplant too soon can result in an unnatural hair growth pattern. The donor can be limited reducing the coverage that can be achieved.

Final decisions as to whether to undertake surgical procedures rest with the surgeon. Full disclosure is required regarding pre-existing medical conditions.

The length of the procedure depends on the planned number of grafts being transplanted and the type of FUE procedure. In general, the procedure may take between 4 to 10 hours.

A hair transplant is performed under a local anaesthesia and mild sedative, if needed. There should be little to no discomfort during the procedure and you are awake throughout your procedure and can take breaks to eat and rest from time to time.

A hair transplant is a minor cosmetic surgical procedure. There are small potential risks and these are fully discussed during your consultation.

Bandages are kept to a minimum, and not routinely used. A light dressing is often preferred to reduce any slight bleeding and aid the healing process.

Hair transplant patients can return to work very soon. It can depend on the working environment. But medically there is nothing to stop you returning to work above the normal healing process almost immediately. Many will arrange their hair transplant around a holiday or season to give themselves a short break. Cosmetically it is possible to wear a hat to hide any signs of the transplant in the first 5-7 days after.

Most patients can resume their favourite sports within 2-3 weeks. Largely dependent on how aggressive the activity may be. This will differ between the technique used. FUE has a faster recovery time compared to FUT. With less restrictions of sporting activities.

Shortly after undergoing an FUE hair transplant, the new hair will look more like stubble on the head. The transplanted hairs may grow very gradually for 2 to 3 weeks before they enter the resting (telogen) phase. During this phase the hair shafts of most, or all, of the grafts will fall out. The transplanted hair will grow once again as it enters the anagen phase after 2 to 3 months. Once hairs are in the anagen growth phase, they will grow as they normally would.

The cost will vary from person to person. As a result, a personal consultation is always recommended. An assessment made by a registered and qualified doctor. The cost can vary depending on a number of factors. For example, the technique used and the number of grafts placed. Hence the importance of a consultation to provide all the details.
