What is a hair transplant procedure?

According to the US National Library of Medicine, approximately 50% of caucasian men experience baldness. It was also found that men with this condition have lower self-esteem, decreased confidence and quality of life, particularly affecting self-perception and interpersonal relationships.

If you are suffering from this condition, having a full head of hair can make you feel better about yourself and can also improve the quality of your relationships and how you perceive yourself. For more information on how hair transplant surgery in the Sydney area can help you, please contact us today or book your consultation.

Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure in which hair follicles are taken from the donor area of the scalp, usually at the back and sides of the head, and transplanted into the bald or balding recipient area. The transplanted follicles are genetically resistant to balding, so they should continue to produce new strands of hair for many years to come.

The older type of hair transplantation procedure is follicular unit transplantation (FUT), which involves removing a strip of tissue from the donor area, separating it into individual follicular units, and then transplanting them into tiny incisions in the balding recipient area. Another type of procedure, and the one we use at Hair Doctors, is the follicular unit extraction (FUE), which involves removing individual follicular units from the donor area using a special tool that is inserted into the skin.

FUE Hair transplantation
and how it works

At your initial consultation, which will take approximately 45 mins, you will meet with one of our doctors directly, who will complete an advanced scalp analysis and create your personalised hair loss plan.

On the day of surgery

On the day of the FUE hair transplant procedure, it will be performed under a local anaesthetic. The hair grafts are then harvested from the donor area at the back of the head one by one. No stitches are required.

Each graft naturally occurs with one, two or three hair follicles which are then prepared and transplanted to the thinning or balding area. The new hairs are implanted individually and at the correct angle to mimic the direction of your own hair.

Post Surgery

For the first couple of nights after surgery, you will be required to sleep with your head elevated on several pillows or in a recliner chair. This will help reduce swelling. Avoid strenuous physical activity during the first week to prevent elevated blood pressure.

No direct sun exposure, alcohol or smoking during the first two weeks as this will delay healing and damage the grafts.

We recommend a few days off from work to allow time to recover. Swelling may be visible for up to 7-10 days whilst healing.

Recovery Time

Recovery time is minimal. As there are no stitches healing is quick and can take up to 2 weeks for the tiny scabs to clear completely,
