What are hair loss and hair thinning?
Hair loss and hair thinning are conditions characterised by a reduction in hair on the scalp, ranging from mild thinning to more extensive loss. They can be caused by a range of factors, including genetics, ageing, hormonal changes, stress and some medications. Androgenetic alopecia, also known as male or female pattern hair loss, is a common progressive condition.
At Hair Doctors, we provide long-term care for patients experiencing hair loss. A range of treatment options may be considered depending on the cause of hair loss and your individual circumstances. Where treatment involving prescription medication may be appropriate, this is assessed and discussed with you at a consultation with our doctor, including how any treatment fits your individual needs.

What causes thinning hair and hair loss?
Thinning hair and hair loss can be caused by a variety of factors, such as genetics, aging, hormonal changes, certain medical conditions, medications, or physical and emotional stress.
Genetics plays a large role in determining a person’s hair growth, and a genetic predisposition to thinning hair or hair loss can be passed on from either parent.
Aging can also contribute to hair thinning and hair loss, as the natural aging process causes the hair to become thinner and weaker over time. Hormonal changes, such as those during pregnancy or menopause, can also cause temporary hair thinning or loss.
Some medical conditions, such as thyroid disorders and autoimmune diseases, can lead to hair thinning and hair loss. In addition, certain medications, such as chemotherapy drugs, can lead to temporary or permanent hair loss.
Lastly, physical or emotional stress can cause hair to become brittle and easily break or fall off.
What are the symptoms of hair loss?
