What is a hair transplant procedure?

Hair loss is a common condition that can affect many individuals and may have an impact on how a person feels about their appearance. A range of treatment options may be available depending on the underlying cause of hair loss and an individual’s circumstances.

Hair transplantation may be considered for some individuals experiencing hair loss following a consultation and clinical assessment. During your consultation, your doctor can discuss the available treatment options, including the potential benefits, risks and limitations of treatment.

Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure that involves relocating hair follicles from a donor area of the scalp, typically at the back or sides of the head, to areas affected by hair loss or thinning.

One hair transplantation technique is follicular unit transplantation (FUT), which involves removing a strip of tissue from the donor area and preparing individual follicular units for transplantation. Another technique is follicular unit extraction (FUE), which involves extracting individual follicular units directly from the donor area for implantation into the treatment area.

The suitability of any procedure will depend on an individual’s circumstances, treatment goals and clinical assessment. During your consultation, your doctor will discuss which treatment options may be appropriate for you.

FUE Hair transplant in Sydney
and how it works

At your initial consultation, which will take approximately 45 mins, you will meet with one of our doctors directly, who will complete an advanced scalp analysis and create an individualised treatment plan.

On the day of surgery

On the day of the FUE hair transplant procedure, it will be performed under a local anaesthetic. The hair grafts are then harvested from the donor area at the back of the head one by one. No stitches are required.

Each graft naturally occurs with one, two or three hair follicles which are then prepared and transplanted to the thinning or balding area. The new hairs are implanted individually and at the correct angle to mimic the direction of your own hair.

Post Surgery

For the first couple of nights after surgery, you will be required to sleep with your head elevated on several pillows or in a recliner chair. This will help reduce swelling. Avoid strenuous physical activity during the first week to prevent elevated blood pressure.

No direct sun exposure, alcohol or smoking during the first two weeks as this will delay healing and damage the grafts.

We recommend a few days off from work to allow time to recover. Swelling may be visible for up to 7-10 days whilst healing.

Recovery Time

Recovery time is minimal. As there are no stitches healing is quick and can take up to 2 weeks for the tiny scabs to clear completely,
